How can we use graphic novels in the classroom?
  • "We can use graphic novels to capture the dialogue in our Conflict Resolution classes. We already have them create a storyboard of a conflict. Now we can use Comic Life to expand it." - Lauren

Six Basic Parts of a Graphic Novel
  1. Page
  2. Panels
  3. Pictures
  4. Captions (narrator that moves story forward)
  5. Speech Balloons
  6. Comic Text (POW, BAM, SLAP)
  7. Silent Partner - the gutter - the space between the images

Remember:
  • You should NOT see too much text in a graphic novel. Let the images tell the story.
  • Text has to be succinct - keep it exact. What word has the most punch?
  • Start with a SCRIPT - It's all about the writing!
  • Planning your Piece - How do you Process? Does the text drive the story in your mind? Does the image? What about your students? Give them the option to process their way but make sure they PLAN first!

Getting Started
  • Open the software
  • Notice the tabs on the upper right - Libraries and Details
  • Go to the details drop down menu - click on the drop down arrow and choose the Built-In Graphic Novel template
  • Click and drag the template to the work space on the left
  • Go to the album drop down menu and choose an image that's inside your photo library
  • Click and drag an image from the right box to the box in the template
  • Drop your image in the box
